Hi Everyone,
A few weeks ago on Monday, Tomas and I helped out on a raffle for mistreated maids. The amount of money we helped to raise - 2200Dhs in all - was put to good use...
Mary, the welfare officer at the Consulate, helped us to identify a 47 year old woman named Alempia Tellor who has been living at the Consulate for two months. There are currently over 120 women camped out there who are either trapped by their visa situation or have no money and nowhere else to go.
Alempia fled her job after suffering physical abuse. Now, she has to leave the country THIS WEEK - or else she might get daily fines and even prison time if her former sponsor decides to press charges.
Our 2200 dirhams has bought Alempia a plane ticket back to Manila and she will leave very soon.
The plane ticket cost 1600 dirhams and the remaining 630 dirhams has gone towards phone cards for the many women there who are trying to connect with their family back in the Philippines.
